The Social Security Administration<\/a> is preparing to fully transition benefit payments to electronic methods this year. The move follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump directing the Treasury Department to stop issuing paper checks for federal payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SSA says electronic payments are safer, faster and cheaper than paper checks. According to the agency, paper checks cost about 20 times more than electronic payments and carry a higher risk of fraud. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beneficiaries who need an exemption may request a waiver from the Treasury Department. The change is part of a broader federal push to modernize government payment systems and reduce administrative costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OPM Expands Federal Leadership Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Senior federal executives will have more opportunities to join a governmentwide leadership program. The Office of Personnel Management has added extra sessions for its Leadership for an Efficient and Accountable Government program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training program was launched last year and is designed to strengthen leadership across federal agencies. Additional dates are set to begin in early 2027. Participating executives must pay $8,500 in tuition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump Names Bill Pulte Acting DNI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

President Trump has selected Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte to serve as acting director of national intelligence. Pulte is expected to continue leading the FHFA while also taking over the top intelligence role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He will replace Tulsi Gabbard, who is resigning at the end of June. Pulte, a businessman and strong Trump ally, has faced criticism from Democrats and some Republicans because of his limited national security experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forest Service Offers Buyouts Before Reorganization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Forest Service is offering early retirement and separation incentives as it prepares for a major reorganization. The agency will offer Voluntary Early Retirement Authority and Voluntary Separation Incentive Payments to affected workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Agriculture Department announced that the Forest Service headquarters will move to Salt Lake City, Utah. About 500 employees may need to relocate. The agency also plans to close its nine regional offices and keep only 20 of its 77 research facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawmakers Seek Foreign Service Reform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Two House Foreign Affairs Committee leaders are pushing to modernize the Foreign Service Act for the first time in decades. The proposed Foreign Service Modernization Act would review the 1980 law and introduce personnel reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill would expand ambassador authority, improve State Department hiring systems and create a Diplomatic Reserve Corps to respond to global crises. It also aims to increase hiring of military veterans into the Foreign Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal Science Agencies Face Deep Staffing Losses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Federal science agencies have seen larger workforce reductions than many other parts of government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the overall federal workforce has reportedly declined by about 12%, agencies such as the Forest Service, National Science Foundation, National Park Service and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration have seen staffing losses between 30% and 40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 118,000 employees at federal science agencies left their jobs between September 2024 and February 2026, according to analysis from the Partnership for Public Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI Order Could Trigger New Cybersecurity Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A new artificial intelligence executive order is expected to lead to fresh cybersecurity directives across government. The order calls for agencies to expand AI-enabled cybersecurity tools and establish an AI cybersecurity clearinghouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also creates a voluntary 30-day government review period for advanced AI models before wider release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The federal government is moving through a period of rapid change, from Social Security\u2019s shift to electronic payments to major workforce reductions, agency reorganizations and new AI cybersecurity rules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
