The change is connected to the payment calendar for Supplemental Security Income, commonly known as SSI.

SSI payments are normally sent on the first day of each month. In July, recipients will get their regular payment on July 1. However, they will also receive their August SSI payment early on July 31 because August 1 falls on a Saturday.

That means some beneficiaries will see two SSI deposits in July and no SSI payment in August.

Why SSI Payments Are Arriving Early

The Social Security Administration adjusts SSI payment dates whenever the first day of a month falls on a weekend or federal holiday. Instead of sending the payment late, the agency sends it on the last business day before the usual date.

That is why the August SSI payment will arrive on July 31. The money is still meant for August expenses, even though it reaches recipients in July.

This can be helpful for budgeting, but it can also cause confusion. Beneficiaries should remember that the second July payment is not a bonus or additional check. It is simply the next month’s payment arriving early.

Who Receives SSI Payments?

Supplemental Security Income provides monthly assistance to older adults, blind individuals and people with disabilities who have very limited income and financial resources.

The program is separate from traditional Social Security retirement benefits, although some people receive both. According to the article, the average SSI payment is about $737 per month.

Because SSI recipients often rely heavily on these payments for basic needs, knowing the exact deposit schedule is important for planning rent, food, medication, utilities and other monthly expenses.

More Early SSI Payments Later In The Year

July will not be the only month with an adjusted SSI schedule. After the July 31 payment for August, SSI checks are expected to return to the first of the month in September and October.

However, another early payment will arrive on October 30 because November 1 falls on a Sunday. SSI recipients will also receive two payments in December: one on December 1 and another on December 31.

The December 31 payment is for January 2027 because New Year’s Day is a federal holiday. Again, these early payments do not increase the total yearly benefit amount. They only shift the payment date.

Traditional Social Security Payment Schedule

Traditional Social Security payments follow a different schedule. These benefits are usually based on the recipient’s birth date.

People born from the 1st through the 10th of the month are paid on the second Wednesday. Those born from the 11th through the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday. People born from the 21st through the 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.

However, there are exceptions. People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997, or those who receive both Social Security and SSI, are generally paid on a different schedule.

In those cases, Social Security is usually paid on the third of the month, while SSI is paid on the first.

Some SSI beneficiaries will receive two payments in July because the August payment is being sent early on July 31. While this may look like a double payment, it is not extra money.

It is an early deposit caused by the calendar. Recipients should plan carefully, since there will be no SSI payment in August.

Some Social Security beneficiaries will receive what looks like a double payment in July, but officials say it is not an extra benefit.
