SSI Recipients Face Two July Payments but No Check in August

Millions of Americans receiving federal benefits should review the July 2026 payment calendar carefully, as some Supplemental Security Income recipients will receive two deposits during July but no separate payment in August.

The unusual arrangement does not provide extra money. Instead, the second July deposit represents the regular August SSI benefit arriving early because August 1 falls on a Saturday.

Recipients who depend on SSI for housing, food, utilities and other essential expenses are being encouraged to plan ahead and reserve the July 31 payment for August.

Why Two SSI Payments Arrive in July

Supplemental Security Income is normally paid on the first day of each month. When that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the Social Security Administration sends the benefit on the previous business day.

SSI recipients will therefore receive their regular July benefit on Wednesday, July 1. Their August benefit will then be deposited early on Friday, July 31.

There will be no separate SSI payment during August because that month’s benefit has already been delivered.

The schedule change does not increase a recipient’s total annual benefits. It only changes when one monthly payment reaches their account.

Early Deposit Is Not a Bonus

Seeing two deposits during one calendar month can create the impression that beneficiaries are receiving additional assistance. However, the July 31 payment must last through August.

Recipients should consider separating that money from funds intended for July expenses. Creating an August budget before the second deposit arrives may help prevent shortages later.

People using automatic bill payments should also review withdrawal dates to ensure enough money remains available throughout August.

Regular Social Security Payments Continue

The early SSI payment does not change the standard August schedule for people receiving only Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits.

For most beneficiaries who began collecting Social Security after April 1997, payments are arranged according to birth dates.

Recipients born from the first through the 10th are generally paid on the second Wednesday. Those born from the 11th through the 20th receive benefits on the third Wednesday, while people born from the 21st through the 31st are normally paid on the fourth Wednesday.

July 2026 Social Security Schedule

The main Social Security payment dates for July are:

  • July 2: Beneficiaries who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 and certain people receiving both Social Security and SSI.
  • July 8: Beneficiaries with birthdays between the first and 10th.
  • July 15: Beneficiaries with birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
  • July 22: Beneficiaries with birthdays between the 21st and 31st.

The payment normally scheduled for July 3 arrives on July 2 because July 3 is the observed federal holiday for Independence Day in 2026.

What Beneficiaries Should Do

Recipients should check their bank accounts, review the official payment calendar and avoid treating the July 31 deposit as additional income.

Anyone who does not receive an expected electronic payment should first contact their bank or financial institution. The SSA advises allowing three additional mailing days before reporting a missing mailed payment.

The double SSI payment schedule in July is simply a calendar adjustment, not a bonus. By setting aside the July 31 deposit for August expenses, recipients can avoid financial pressure during a month when no separate SSI check will arrive.
